Opening Musical Doors
The Children's Concert
As part of our mission to invite young people
into the wondrous world of classical music, the
Symphony of the Redwoods again collaborated with
four local schools and many dedicated individuals
to bring our children live symphonic music in the
Fifth Annual Children’s Concert. These concerts,
performed in the schools, present the instruments
of the orchestra and the excitement of live orchestral
music to all the children in grades K-5 in Fort
Bragg and K-8 in Mendocino, including students
from the Westport School, Mendocino Coast Christian
School, the home schooling community, special needs
students, and Middle School band members. The Symphony
works with the teachers by providing guidelines
and tapes or CDs before the performance.
We are most grateful to our Concert Sponsors:
The Redwood Parents’ Club of Redwood Elementary
School, the Dana Gray PTA, and MUSE of Mendocino.
The Symphony Board wishes to thank Sandra Cosca,
Christina Rossum, and especially Eva Kidwell, Coordinator
of the Music in the Schools Program, who generously
initiated this effort and continues with boundless
enthusiasm to seek support and cooperation from
schools, parents, and orchestra members.
Our goal is to expose our children to the experience
of live orchestral music, nurture their appreciation,
encourage their excitement, and perhaps stimulate
some to choose to play an instrument. Now into
our fifth season, the Children’s Concerts and Chamber
Music for Children have become permanent additions
to the Symphony of the Redwoods’ endeavors.
